WAVESISTERS x SMILE AT YOUR SISTER

2015-05-17

dear friends of the ocean, surfing and yoga, I've got some great news to tell. sometimes you know it's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings. I'll leave Vienna for the next months to stay in Lanzarote this summer. the WaveSisters surf & yogacamp in Caleta de Famara will be my new home from the beginning of july until the end of september. I am looking forward to live in the rhythm of nature, to surf a lot and to welcome you on the rooftop of the surfhouse to make yoga.

it took me some time to get here. I had a vague idea of me going places. step by step I explored them by the wayside and almost each and every person I met has done its bit that I am where I am today. what I want to say is: trust yourself, trust your path. you are exactly where you are supposed to be.

and because all movements affect each other you maybe think of going on a surf trip while reading this.

WaveSisters is a surf & yogacamp that loves to take you into the water and into the waves. it aims to increase the community of female surfers and to give women the possibility to meet and share their experiences and this happens in some of the most beautiful locations in the world – on the Canary Island of Lanzarote as well as in France and Portugal.

some impressions from Portugal (above) and France (below)

if you wanna join WaveSisters it would be more than a pleasure to welcome you. for more information and booking contact me via smileatyoursister(at)gmail.com

SALT IN MY HAIR – I LIKE THAT, WHAT IS IT?

2015-05-08

salty sister love! today I am super happy to introduce an outshining blog in the rare all-girls travel and surf scene in the german speaking world – the ingredient to happy life: salt in my hair. it's a beautiful blog taking you off the beaten track run by individualists, explorers and mermaids called Marie, Kamila, Hana and Tina.

hej girls, how's 2015 so far?
Marie: pretty good actually! I have been surfing in Morocco already, Tina enjoys her yoga and surf life in Central America and Hanna lives in the city of romance: Rome. only our lovely Kamila has to trim back her travel plans a bit, as she started a job this year. but she is planning little escapes to overcome her travel nostalgia.

sounds great! please tell us about your evocative website "salt in my hair".
Marie: Kamila and I have founded salt in my hair. we actually got to know each other when we were 15.400km apart from each other. Kamila was doing a study abroad semester in Bandung, Indonesia and I was studying in Pforzheim (a small city in Germany). We only met a couple of times at university and were connected on facebook. when Kamila tried surfing the first time, she fell in love with the ocean and when she saw all my surfing pictures on facebook, she knew that I was carrying the same love with me. and that’s how we connected. we started writing and were both raving about our deep love to the ocean. we both knew immediately that we would become great friends. after she returned to Germany we came up with the idea to built up a platform about surfing, about unconventional travels, about local brands and about the lifestyle that comes along with it. Hanna and Tina joined us after the launch and we are so grateful to have them in our team. I met Hanna during a shared car ride from Berlin to Hamburg and our yoga chic, Tina, is a good friend of Hanna. Without our blog I would have probably not met the other girls, who are all great friends now.

your blog is all about the journey. what's your prefered style of traveling?
Kamila: spontaneous drifting, discovering new places and experiencing local culture and lifestyle without being tied to time and place commitments. I love to stay at places as long as I like.

do you ever travel altogether?
Marie: unfortunately not yet! but I have been traveling with Kamila in Indonesia and have been on a snowboard trip to Laax with Hanna already. I also visited Tina in Sylt, where we actually had a pretty good surf and yoga session. but I hope one day we’ll do a wonderful surf-roadtrip with all the girls. that would be a dream.

would you have tips for landlocked girls who wanna live their travel & surfing dream but don't know how to realize it yet?
Hanna: there are many things that can hinder your travel plans, sometimes it’s the money, time or other kinds of obligations. but on the other hand there are many opportunities to realize your travel dreams. I always try to combine traveling with other “compulsory” activities, like studying or internships, like a few years ago when I wrote my bachelor thesis in the Dominican Republic. also, I make traveling one of my top priorities... so even though a reasonable person might say that at a certain point you have to focus on other things I just go traveling and try to arrange all the rest around it. it is possible.

there's a nice article about "meerweh" on your blog. would you know about any remedy for wanderlust?
Tina: inhale deep – exhale deep, close your eyes and just enjoy the feeling of wanderlust, because it is also a positive feeling and your next trip is waiting, so don´t  feel sad and just look forward to your next adventure. I’m  sure there will be one… or even try a hot yoga class during winter time ;) could be a great relaxing and challenging remedy for wanderlust as well!

what does traveling and surfing mean to you and what has it changed in your lifes?
Kamila: traveling is… full fascination, inspiration, happiness and mindpeace. the greatest emotions come up when entering the ocean with my board. catching a wave and merging with water as an earth element. small moments and big adventures, seeing new places and meeting new people from all over the world – I do not want to miss this anymore. it makes me incredible strong and happy.

what do you believe in?
Marie: I think the most important thing is that you believe in yourself.
Kamila: the journey is the reward: every small life step and trip, every small impression is a part of something big.

and what makes you smile?
Tina: surfing a wave on a lazy longboard!
Hanna: the sun, the sea and of course chocolate!

please show us a picture that takes you back to one of your favourite destinations so far.

Medewi, Bali

Marie: most magical surf place I have been so far. you’ll find palm trees and perfect, long lefthanders there and a lot of super friendly locals, who love to share their waves, have fresh fish BBQ together and show you around.

and a little either or game at the end:
salt or pepper? salt, sea salt!
longboard or short board? longboard
writing or taking pictures? taking pictures

FUERTEVENTURA with PLANET SURFCAMPS

2014-11-10

at times when Vienna gets a little grumpy it has always been a good choice to jump on an airplane to follow the sun. coming back hardly ever felt so eased and trustful before. it might be because of the people I met and life plans that I got to know, that are at some point no plans at all. or maybe it was the fact that there was enough space to just be and the time that I had to question all the conditioning and ideas of a proper life that were even not mine.

but let's do some fun travel talk! my trip started with a stopover in Zurich where I stayed overnight at the airport. whenever your connecting flight departs the following day go and check sleeping in airports to find a cozy place for yourself. from Zurich it has been just four more hours to reach the Canary Island that promises 300 days of sunshine and consistent swell all year long.

once I arrived in Fuerteventura I went up to the north of the island to Corralejo, the hometown of my home away from home: Planet Surfcamps. I watched beautiful sceneries passing by that changed from bleak landscapes with rising volcanos to endless white dunes all along the way accompanied by the sparkling Atlantic Ocean.

so much love at Punta Blanca

Playa del Cotillo

golden hour at the North Shore

after a warm welcome at the newly built surf house I headed out to explore Corralejo. omg, it's a longboarder's paradise! those streets down to the beach scream for miles of smiles while cruising. just consider to duck down to get your face out of the way of friendly waving palm leaves.
besides being a cool place for longboarding and going out at night Corralejo is a great homebase to check different surf spots with various beach and reef breaks around within a short time. Fuerteventura serves spots for all levels and you can be sure to be in good hands once you jump into the van that brings you preferably to Rocky Point, El Cotillo, to one of the spots at the North Shore or if you are lucky enough possibly even to the french bakery in Lajares on the way back. do yourself a favour and get a brownie in this hippie village, it's so good.

if you are into skating flat or dancing on your longboard you should check this parking area at the roundabout on the top of the mainstreet that leads down to the center. you gonna have fun.

things that are pretty much fun as well
playing ping-pong, jumping into the pool, cooking together with your roomies or having bbq at the surf house, challenging yourself on the indo board, doing yoga, playing Marco's drinking game, squeezing in a layday at flag beach, wandering through dunes, hiking up a volcano, taking a boat to Los Lobos or just enjoy doing sweet nothing at the roof terrace at night.

and do remember this tower. it will lead you home in tipsy nights.

some final personal questions to Fuerteventura
what are your favourite colours? brown, beige and turquoise.
do you have a favourite stone? volcanic rock!
what do you crave for? playing with waves, watching the clouds passing by
and I like to party.

what's your favourite food?
paella, fish and papas arrugadas.
and what about your favourite animal? I love goats.

the pureness of the landscape gave me so much space and clarity that I can't imagine to not come back someday soon. in the end the moments that I remember the most are the ones about people, laughs and smiles.

thanks for having me

SHE PROJECT – I LIKE THAT. WHAT IS IT?

2014-09-02

these australian girls took my heart by storm. be it their feminine and graceful designs of surf hardware or their embracement of pros, weekend warriors, stylish maestros and foamie fanatics, they make us gurfers feel special in the line up. I am sending love and a high five once around the world to she project.

first things first, who is she project?
she project was conceived by myself and co-owner, Sarah, with the idea of producing, fun and fashionable yet performance driven surf hardware for the women's market, and also being discontent with the options for female surfers from the major surf hardware brands. I grew up on the Gold Coast and was a competitive surfer for a few years, I also spent time working for a global surfboard manufacturer selling surfboards and liaising with key retail accounts. it was this very hands on connection with surf hardware that I started to realise an evident gap in the market and knew myself and other girls would like to be able to show style and fashion in the water just as much as out. in the past, surf hardware has been very male driven and as a result the styles available are very masculine, we wanted to change that as well as get women thinking about their equipment to enhance their experience in the surf.

how was it to start your own business?
when She Project was still just an idea over coffee, we knew it would be hard work, but we also knew there was a demand for funky surf products that we would prefer to use. my background is in marketing and graphic design, and my business partner has a sales and marketing background, so we work well together! I could have never expected how many challenges there would be along the way though. we knew we wanted She Project to be a business but also a platform for female surfers, a resource for blogs and info and a way for us to give back to the community around us through empowering others. the rest was not so glamourous, a lot of coffee and not a lot of sleep!

is there an idea she project is living by?
SHE is also an acronym for Surf, Humanitarian, Empowerment. we use these three pillars to influence any of our business decisions and initiatives. we are passionate about empowering women through surfing so any chance we get to help out charities or foundations we are all for it. we recently donated several sets of fins to an orphanage in Mexico called Mision Mexico, and have a great collaboration in the works there. surfing has given us friendships, connections and a place to connect with nature and forget about the troubles of the world, so if we can help give this experience to other people then we have done our job.

you also run the happy sea creatures project. please tell us more about it.
happy sea creatures is a simple concept, we wanted to limit any kind of materials that cause harm to our ocean... including all the nasty plastic wrap you typically see tailpads wrapped in. it seems crazy to make something that's meant to share the fun and happiness we get out of surfing and combine that with anything that could be negative for that environment. hence the happy sea creatures!

talking about sea creatures, what's your favourite one?
don't make me pick, argh all of them! I think I will always be in awe of dolphins, they are such intelligent creatures with such highly evolved communication.

if we would travel to Australia carrying our longboard under the arm what would be the most funny wave to ride?
well, I am a little biased towards my home break so I would have to say Greenmount which is part of the stretch of right-handers that form the "superbank" from Snapper Rocks to Kirra. Greenmount is generally a little gentler, less-crowded and perfect for a longboard. other than that you really can't beat the beautiful right hand point breaks of Noosa or Byron Bay. both beaches are apart of National Parks and the natural scenery is breaktaking. if you are lucky you can spot koalas on the walk around Noosa headland.

where do we get your pretty things?
at the moment in our online store, we have made sure to make freight overseas as cheap as possible for our non-Australian customers. we are experiencing organic growth and starting to get orders for surf shops. we would love to get our products over your side of the world!

GOLDEN RIDE MAGAZINE – SURF YOGA FLOW

2014-07-14

surfing and yoga are two of our favourite things in summer. that's why anita fuchs, editor-in-chief and photographer of golden ride magazine, and me got up early morning at sunrise and captured a surf yoga flow for all the lucky ones beneath you who are gonna go on a surf trip soon.

we play with dynamic movements, balance and flexibility to build up power and stamina. so you'll be the one who catches the wave – and not the wave is gonna catch you.

additionally to all the inspiring stories of this summer issue that wanna make you go far far away to I am especially happy about the feature about sophie friedel – the-always-smiling-and-always-carrying-peace-in-her-heart-girl – who presents some great slide trick tips for longboarders.

a very special thanks goes to Christine Stiessel who contributed ideas to the surf yoga flow and refined it. thank you for creating such a profound base that I will build on my continually journey after an enriching year at yogawege teacher training.

BLONDY WETSUITS. I LIKE THAT! WHAT IS IT?

2014-06-10

dog days are over when we all went in black unisex wetsuits to water. high five to two spanish girls that join feminine shapes and colours that make girls feel ride pretty. I dare to say normcore is over. hola blondy wetsuits!

who is blondy wetsuits?
we are two sea lovers in search of a wetsuit that make us feel comfortable, sexy and unique while we enjoy the ocean and make things we love.

when designing a wetsuit what do you always have in mind?
women. there's more women in the water and its women who have to design womens surfer clothes. we also get inspired in our trips, people and the world that surrounds us and palmtrees pictures.

I love your playful and flowery shoot including Louie Louie flowerpieces. let us know more about this collaboration.
we are really happy with the collaboration. it was as simple as picking up the phone, telling LouieLouie girls we loved their flowerpieces and asking them if they wanted to make something together. we met personally the day of the shooting and the pictures are the result of the good energy that was going on between the girls who were there that day and the desire and yearning to go through with our projects.

bit by bit even many of the big brands switch to more feminine cuts and brighter colours for wetsuits. what do you think will be the next big thing? or rather how would you imagine your dream wetsuit if there would be no limitations productional?
a friend of mine dreams with the idea of having wetsuits that you could put them on like spray. well, why not? when we are designing a new collection we have so many ideas and options we go crazy, there are so many things we wanna try and that havent been done yet. our objective is to dress up women in the water and make them feel beautiful with trendy designs.

what's the coldest place you found yourself surfing with a blondy wetsuit?
the coldest place has been Hendaye, France. a february stormy day of this winter. while we were in the water it started hailing heavily. it was extremly cold for a girl from the south of Spain.

what makes you smile?
it's easy to make us smile, but if I had to choose I would say dancing, catching a good wave, surfing new spots and when tomorrow isn't the same than today.
