GET SHRED READY WITH ANNA LANGER

2014-02-21

yoga is one of the best means to get your body, mind and soul ready for the mountains.

the various strengthening and lengthening exercises don’t only prepares bones and muscles for the action up hill, but also trains the mind to focus, balance, and stay calm in all situations. and since everything just flows that little bit smoother with proper inspiration, this whole sequence was shot in front of the perfect winter backdrop in a little Bavarian forest to add some external motivation.

with a bit of yoga experience you can obviously try some of the poses on your next walk or in your favourite nature spot – just make sure you have tried them before and are absolutely confident with their execution as we will not take any liability for any mishaps!

start standing in Tadasana with your feet hip-width apart, outer sides of feet parallel to the sides of your mat. have the knees slightly bent and your pelvis upright (tailbone slightly tucked without losing the curve in the lower back). open your arms and palms towards the sky and charge yourself up with nature's energy in Prana Mudra. Close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths here to center yourself and ignite the practice.

eyes still closed, swipe your arms up until palms meet and cross all fingers except index fingers and thumbs for the centering Sampurna Mudra. exhale lower your hands exhaling through the midline and bring them in front of your heart. repeat as many times as you like – or until you feel really focused and centered.

Uttanasana

exhale, bend your knees and bow forward for Uttanasana. bend knees so much (or little) that your finger tips reach the ground. inhale lengthen your spine (and bend knees more if you have to), exhale round and bow again. repeat 3 times. add a couple rounds of Sun Salutations to get the energy moving and the muscles warmed up. You can use any variation / style that you know or like. if you’re not familiar with any yet, there is a bunch of video tutorials on YouTube.

Utkatasana

continue from Uttanasana by rotating your hands so palms face forward and thumbs out to the sides. Exhale, bend your knees and sit back until your thighs are almost parallel to the floor and you can still see your big toes (if not, carefully bring your weight more to your heels until you can). inhale and sweep your arms up for Utkatasana, palms facing each other. make sure your knees don’t drop in to the middle but keep them pointing in the same direction as your toes. This is a great pose to strengthen your thighs, insides of the thighs and the knees! before staying, we’ll add a little dynamic flow to get in the right energy. exhale bow forward again and straighten legs for Uttanasana, inhale sit back and sweep arms up again. repeat a couple of times, then stay with your arms overhead when exhaling. play with the alignment of your pelvis to make sure your lower back is neither hollow nor flat but in a smooth, long curve. breath deeply and evenly through your nose. after 6 to12 breaths, exhale and bend forward, straighten your legs, grab hold of opposite elbows and swing your upper body from side to side for a couple of breaths.

ABOUT A GIRL – ALBA PARDO TATCHE

2012-10-30

it was last year when I met Alba bustling around at the women in boardsports retreat for the first time. Alba is photographer and journalist, she has just launched her own online snowboard mag and because she is so into everything she does she even received a trophy for her efforts she is making for women in boardsports. in short, she's more than just a pretty face.

it's about a month ago you've been to the women in boardsports retreat in Saas-Fee. please make a short summary of your impressions.
the wib conference in Saas-Fee is always a special occasion, some of the most inspirational women and the shakers and makers of the industry come to the beautiful Swiss town to share their knowledge and experiences. the conferences, the workshops and all the activities are great. however, my favorite part is all the new people I get to meet there and how some of them become great friends.
this year, one of my favorite speeches was from Ida Holmen, she’s the digital content manager at skullcandy. she brought the real feeling into the event hall, and what it is like to be working for certain brands in the industry. also, the video conference we had with Kabul’s Benafsha Tasmim, the sports and education coordinator at skateistan was really emotive and inspiring. I could go on and on, and name all the ladies that came this year, but then this interview would be infinite. so I suggest that you all visit women in board sports! what a great promo here!

you are playing an important part in wib. in which way are you exactly involved?

well, it all began in 2009 when I randomly landed in Saas-Fee, a good friend brought me to the first wib retreat. Daniela and Carmela, the organizers, had gathered together some of the most incredible women in the industry, and being their first year organizing it they had some amazing ideas but couldn’t do it all. I had my camera with me and I began taking photos for them. that brought me to film the event and edit the videos and also take care of their website and social media. obviously, it’s not only me doing all this. we are a few girls that teamed up to help the wib founders to evolve and make this great platform even better.

you`ve already gave us an insight to your favourite speeches. what else attracted your attention?
Ida’s speech was one of my favorites, but also Anna Maria Rugarli the csr and sustainability director for vf international was super inspiring.
the great thing about wib is that not only the talks are inspiring, but also all the contributions that the attendees make, the discussions and the open mic times.
I’ve learnt about some great projects in snowboarding like Nichola’s Thost sprungbrett and swiss snowboarding girls, and also some initiatives in water sports like the butterfly effect presented by Tatiana Howard.

besides your efforts in wib you are photographer and journalist. there must have been beautiful landscapes and interesting people your work brought you to. what do you appreciate the most about your job?
you just said it. what I really appreciate and I feel thankful for is all the wonderful places I’ve been but most importantly all the people I’ve met (and I will meet) on the way. I know it might sound stupid, but I’ve recently realized that this is what makes me happy: going out there and meeting people to make things happen. I don’t really care about the rest.

what makes a perfect picture for you?
hey, this is a hard question. I don’t think that only one photo can be perfect, otherwise I’m screwed. no, but seriously now, for me a good picture is the one that you can hang in your room, living room or even in your toilet, and never get tired of it. so this means all sort of styles and photos can reach for the perfection, but personally, I never get tired of snowy photos with incredible riders in it, and the only thing they have in common is that none of them are mine.

reading your blog reminds me things that I sometimes forget while being stucked in the oh so busy media world. with posts like smiles make it easier or I'm not just a pretty face you are bringing things in question. is there anything you would like to ditch on this way?
I just read again those entries, and I bet you choose the angriest ones in propose, hahaha, but realizing how angry I can get sometimes it makes me smile. it is true that being a girl into a man’s world ain’t easy, specially when the first impression is always based on how big your backpack is, and many many times I’ve felt underestimated, but at the end feeling passionate about the career I’ve chosen and keep trying is what really matters, and no complaints should be allowed, as after all, we are super lucky.

additionally to your blog you've launched your own snowboard online mag. what's the idea behind sbes mag?
I’ve always known that I love to tell stories and if they involve snowboarding and great people I love it even more. so I’ve been working as a freelancer for many years and to be honest, I always dreamt about that day that I could launch my own magazine. however, I’m super perfectionist and I didn’t want to do it just for the sake of it. but the idea came back to me last winter, when I realized that there wasn’t a single spanish snowboard magazine in the net that would offer original content and be a window to the international scene but at the same time an opportunity for the local riders and entrepreneurships to show their value. so I guess this is the main idea: offer quality snowboard related content in spanish, and create a platform where everyone can find what they need in this matter while showing off to the world that in Spain we also ride, we also have mountains and that even though we are often forgotten by brands and big event organizers, there is a big fan community, or should I say “market opportunity” so they know what I’m talking about?

if you could change anything in the snowboard industry what would it be?
I always ask this very same question the people I interview. I guess sometimes I wish that more industry people would think in the way where snowboarding brings a certain lifestyle, and not on the other direction. I think this would professionalize snowboarding (in a good way) a little more.

pizza or burger? goat cheese pizza please!
hat or cap? hat
halloween or christmas? can I keep the presents and
the costumes but ditch the zombies and the religion?

O'NEILL EVOLUTION 2012 PT. II

2012-01-13

talking to celia miller

due to heavy snowfall the semifinals of the girls were put off one day. in this way celia miller found enough time to chat with us laid-back about her idols, her own shop and her plans for this season before she went for the next treerun.

hi celia, where did you grew up?
I kind of grew up all over the east coast. I was born in maryland and i did high school in connecticut. five years ago I moved to breckenridge, colorado.

where there any girls you looked up to?
I love mary-france roy and annie boulanger. they are the backcountry girls that always inspired me.

we suppose you are more into back country riding than to park riding.
in the past I have been doing a lot of filming and shooting. this year I'm gonna do a lot more contests. and this is kind of to see wheter I wanna make an attempt to the olympics. I would really like to do it and take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

did you had any dangerous situations in the backcountry?
nothing too dangerous. we always start with the crew and we are very careful. we bring our gear and try to test things before as much as we can. I've been lucky I have not been in the avalanches yet. let's knock on wood, hopefully it doesn't happen.

you are in the o'neill team for more than a year now. how is it?
I love it. I'm so glad to be part of o'neill. it's such kind of a family feel. we travel around a lot and they opened a lot of opportunities for me. I've seen a lot of places and I can do a lot of cool things through them.

you also represent the new phillips / o'neill headphones. what kind of music do you like to listen to when you snowboard?
let's see, I love to listen to edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros. they are awesome. but i also have a mix of r'n'b and rap and i got some rock'n'roll. i just like music in general.

we enjoyed watching your part in peep show's "let's make better mistakes tomorrow". please tell us a bit more about that video.
I love the girls of peep show. I've been filming with them the past couple of years. I shared a part with my friend silvia and got some backcountry shots in it. I think they did a real good job. it's a good portrait of women snowboarding. the stuff that's going on in the movie is progressive and exciting to watch.

would you say there are any differences between european and american snowboarding?
I have not seen any major differences. we all travel together. it feels like we are all a lot of in the same places. we are not as separated as people think.

is it important for you to have girls around you when you snowboard or do you enjoy it more to hang out with your boys?
I like the combination. I think definitely riding with men, especially in the back country, was so important for me. I've learnt everything from then. but then there is nothing like riding with girls since they are more equal. i go in the back country with guys and they wanna build huge jumps which are a little intimidating but it really pushes me. when i can go out with a girl we can build something that we feel comfortable with and we can try our tricks on. I would say both are good.

we heard you run your own store. how came that?
yes, I opened my own business last year in june. I just have really small boutique brands. it's completely seperated from snowboarding. I don't carry any snowboard or skateboard companies. it's my life outside of snowboarding. snowboarding doesn't last forever. I wanted to start something that I can carry on with me regardless of what I'm doing with my snowboard career. I am the store owner and I have five or six people working for me which allows me to travel and not be there. that's amazing.

O'NEILL EVOLUTION 2012 PT. I

2012-01-10

we just love winter. we love to stamp through knee-deep snow and watch snow flakes dancing wild in the wind. we enjoy to make snowball fights and drink glühwein with our friends. but what we dearly love and can't be without is snowboarding.

davos turned out as the fulfilled winter dream last week. it snowed like crazy four days long. amidst the thick snow flurry we watched the best boys and girls in freestyle snowboarding at the first major event on the 2012 ttr world snowboard tour.

tons of snow proved to get one man's meat and another man's poison at o'neill evolution 2012. as snowboard addicted crowds were stoked by masses of powder at the jakobshorn the shapers got all hands full to prepare the big air for the finals in time.

in the end the semifinals of the girls were postponed one day. therefore they were blessed with the best riding conditions all week and impressed with striking air time.

EMA. WE LIKE THAT. WHAT IS IT?

2011-12-15

we believe in the small things and in inperfection. they are perfect because they are not. as from now we will introduce small labels which are outstanding because they are made with love. where it's not about masses and money but good vibes and freedom. maria ferres is the perfect girl to begin with. with her label ema - protect your smile she combines all mentioned attributes and brings a mix of urban savyness and mountain innocence at once.

i make
neckwear to protect people's smiles
i do it because
destiny brought me the opportunity and I love it

there´s something captivating about you and your label. how did you become such a bright and positive person?
I grew up in barcelona in a big, big family surrounded by happiness and considering love, respect and effort as core values. I'm so lucky my family loves nature, sports and of course the snow. I think the combination of my family's strict education and my wild soul made me who I am today. being happy every instant is my life's goal.

when did you got in touch with the snowboard scene for the first time? maybe not an easy thing for a spanish girl?
it was maybe 12 years ago when I started spending my winters in andorra. I can proudly say I've been part of the snowboard evolution in spain. nowadays it's really popular and snowboarding is understood as a lifestyle and passion but when I started to discover the snowboard scene it wasn't that easy and even more so for a spanish girl.

was your label planned or did it just happened like many good things do?
EMA just happened. I never planned something like this. I started creating my own designs and people started asking about it. meeting riders like marc swoboda or dominik wagner, who were really stoked about my neckwarmers and wanted to wear it also helped to start spreading the word around. finally a really bad injury in my arm made me change my life plans and gave me time to think and decide to start it for real. I guess that's what I love about EMA, every day and every step is a surprise :)

EMA - Protect your smile from Ema Protect your smile on Vimeo.

please tell us a bit more about the production process.
starting a new collection means improving the last one. I like to ask my riders and customers how they feel wearing the products and then I start thinking about the best way to improve it, but it's all about style, function, design and comfort. choosing styles and designs is amazing. I really love it. I just try to get inspiration everywhere (street, art, nature, fashion, people …) and try to find original and unique designs. I love textures and colors, that's why I say you can feel the difference wearing, touching or looking at EMA. EMA is a really young company. I take care of everything but I get some help for the production. everything is handmade in barcelona.

when we think about ema we see many bright shining faces. how do you choose your family members?
all the riders in EMA's family must have this special spark inside. it's just happy people in love with snowboarding. I think above all I need stylish riders spreading good vibes and smiles around the world.

it seems you travel a lot. what´s the most beautiful thing about it for you?
I love traveling because it makes me feel free. I love getting lost finding my way around, discover places and cultures and meeting amazing people on the road. but I really hate saying bye when I have to leave, I'm so bad with that …

what do you believe in?
I believe in destiny.

destiny decided you might be the happy owner of one of ema's handmade bandanas soon. all you have to do is to visit our facebook page and tell us what makes you smile.
